Hemu’s Egg Shell Art
When I was in second year of architecture school, I once went to my professor for a technical drawing submission. They pointed out everything that was wrong with it down to small details. I told them that I didn’t have the right pens and hence, the drawing has turned out faulty. I vividly remember them saying that day, “A good draftsman never blames their tools.” For some reason, that single phrase stuck with me and I use it as a means to ground me—art is in what I create. It’s not in fancy rice paper or expensive watercolor papers. It’s in the everyday (something that Indian culture taught me). It’s in the everyday materials we use and discard, there is beauty in it all if we care to listen. More than anything, recycled art reminds me of the constant resilience and strength of materials we otherwise consider fragile. The very thought gives me more courage and strength to go through the ups and downs of my own life.
