During my first year of graduate school, I had the good opportunity to shadow a peer of mine who knew how to turn pens, and he introduced me to world of woodworking. It opened up a whole new portal of 'making' to degrees of accuracy and precision-- both the designer and the artist in me were appeased.
Since then, I have been in the wood-shop as much as I can, particularly during summers. I am particularly drawn to turning pens on the lathe machine. The process in itself is extremely meditative and calming. The gratification in the making, adapting to the materials in hand and developing ideas calls for my desire to keep continuing on this even after I graduate.
